LDS Eternal Marriage Object Lesson

The object lesson on eternal marriage within the LDS Church elucidates the significance of eternal union in matrimony. The scriptural teachings highlight that without being sealed to one's spouse, exaltation in the Heavenly Father's happiness plan is unattainable. This crucial ordinance is detailed in Doctrine and Covenants 131:1-4.

IF husband one repents, rejoins the Church and regains the priesthood

What are the conditions for receiving Holy Orders? According to Church teachings, a person must receive the Sacrament of Confirmation and be in a state of grace in order to receive Holy Orders. Another requirement is to have a strong love for the ecclesiastical discipline and to have a strong commitment to prayer and sacred studies. Additionally, a person must have no canonical impediment to receive Holy Orders.

IF husband one requests to be sealed again to his children

The sealing of a husband and wife is a conditional covenant, meaning the couple must follow the covenant to be saved. This is similar to a baptismal covenant that qualifies a person for the celestial kingdom of glory. If the sealing is not kept, the individual will spend eternity in either the telestial or terrestrial kingdom.

Many people believe that the current sealing practice does not promote family permanence and is unfair to the sealing partners. Others feel that the ecclesiastical authorities do not have the same compassion for men and women. Regardless of the motives of sealing, a greater understanding of the practice can lead to greater confidence in a marriage that lasts forever.

A husband one may remarry more than one woman. However, this will only occur if he has a new wife. In such a case, he will have to ask his bishop to cancel the sealing. If the previous wife dies, the first husband will not have the right to marry another woman. However, the second husband will be able to find a new wife during the millennium. The children of the first marriage will still be sealed to the second husband.

IF husband one regains the priesthood

The LDS doctrine regarding eternal marriage teaches that marriages must be performed in temples and must last throughout time and eternity. During this time, both the husband and wife become husband and wife. If both parties keep their covenants and obey the priesthood order, the marriage will continue in the celestial kingdom.

It may not be obvious, but the LDS church has a very archaic view of women. It would take generations to ordain women. Women's equality in the Church is not yet complete, and refusing to have this conversation shows that the Church wishes to regress. The further that the Church puts off conversation on the issue, the greater the chasm will grow between its current view of equality and the attitude of future generations.
