The two drank beer together. During the night, Springsteen asked her age. "Twenty," she responded. She was then 15 years old. Then, at the next show, Bruce Springsteen greeted her and asked about her marriage.

They became public figures a few months after their marriage. After the divorce, Smith moved out weeks later. They divorced two years later, and Patti was awarded $880,000.
